The LOT Foundation began as a seemingly unattainable vision placed by God on the hearts of Adam and Karen Rummel. While working with a small group of friends on an outreach project with their church, the Rummels had their eyes opened up to the reality that there are so many organizations in existence that are desperately trying to feed, clothe and provide shelter for so many of our city’s underserved. Meanwhile the organizations that are serving others are struggling to stay afloat financially and are usually unable to spend money to grow or even to maintain their facilities. Any emergencies that happen can be a major financial crisis, and will most certainly take funds away from the work of that organization. One example in particular happened in the summer of 2010 at a well-known outreach ministry in Charlotte that feeds hundreds of our homeless neighbors a hot meal daily. There was a major water line to burst and caused a roof collapse above the kitchen of the main facility. The disaster shut down their kitchen for weeks and they were unable to serve hot foods during the entire time. While they were fortunate to have insurance cover a great deal of the repairs themselves, there were many expenses that were not covered during the ordeal. They had to spend so much money in order to continue their ministry; money that would have typically been able to go a much longer way. After feeling God tugging at their heart to use their talents to serve others, they prayed about it, put a plan in motion, and asked several others with a servant’s heart to join in on the Board to oversee The LOT Foundation. The name came from a commonly used term in the Bible “Least of These” used to describe those around us in need. We feel we can best serve the least of these by supporting the organizations by providing construction and specialty maintenance services at no cost or extremely low cost. We will depend upon financial donations from churches, corporations, and generous citizens to carry out this mission.
